Shoulder Surgery

Shoulder surgery is a medical procedure performed to treat various conditions related to the shoulder joint. The decision to undergo shoulder surgery is typically made by a patient in consultation with their doctor or surgeon, and it is based on the patient's specific medical history, symptoms, and the expected benefits and risks of the surgery.

There are several types of shoulder surgeries, including:

  • Arthroscopy - a minimally invasive surgical procedure that involves the use of a small camera and surgical instruments to treat conditions such as rotator cuff tears, labral tears, and shoulder impingement.
  • Open surgery - a more traditional surgical procedure that involves making a larger incision in the shoulder to access the affected area. This type of surgery is typically used to treat conditions such as shoulder fractures, shoulder dislocations, and advanced rotator cuff tears.
  • Joint replacement - a surgical procedure that involves replacing the damaged shoulder joint with an artificial joint. This type of surgery is typically used to treat severe arthritis or other degenerative conditions that cause significant pain and limited mobility.

Shoulder Replacement

Shoulder replacement is a surgical procedure that involves replacing the damaged parts of the shoulder joint with artificial parts. The shoulder joint is made up of two bones - the upper arm bone (humerus) and the shoulder blade (scapula) - that are covered with cartilage to allow for smooth movement. In shoulder replacement surgery, the damaged parts of the joint are removed and replaced with a metal or plastic implant that allows for smoother movement and reduces pain.

The surgery is typically recommended for people who have severe arthritis in the shoulder joint or who have sustained a serious shoulder injury that has caused irreversible damage. The goal of the surgery is to relieve pain, improve range of motion, and allow patients to resume their normal activities.

There are two types of shoulder replacement surgeries: total shoulder replacement, where both the ball and socket of the joint are replaced, and partial shoulder replacement, where only the ball is replaced. The specific type of surgery recommended will depend on the extent of the damage to the joint.

Recovery from shoulder replacement surgery typically involves physical therapy to help regain strength and range of motion in the shoulder. Most patients are able to resume normal activities within several months after the surgery.

Shoulder Arthoscopy

Shoulder arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that involves the use of a small camera and surgical instruments to diagnose and treat problems in the shoulder joint. The procedure is performed using a small incision and a tiny camera, called an arthroscope, which is inserted into the shoulder joint. The camera allows the surgeon to see the inside of the joint on a video monitor, and the surgical instruments are used to repair or remove damaged tissue.

Arthroscopy is commonly used to treat various conditions that affect the shoulder joint, such as rotator cuff tears, labral tears, shoulder impingement, and shoulder instability. The procedure is less invasive than traditional open surgery, and typically results in less pain, scarring, and faster recovery time.

During the procedure, the patient is placed under general anesthesia, and the surgeon makes a small incision in the shoulder to insert the arthroscope. The camera allows the surgeon to see inside the joint and guide the surgical instruments to the affected area. After the procedure is complete, the incision is closed with sutures or steri-strips, and the patient is usually able to go home the same day.

Recovery from shoulder arthroscopy typically involves rest, ice, and physical therapy to help regain strength and range of motion in the shoulder. Most patients are able to resume normal activities within a few weeks to several months after the surgery, depending on the extent of the damage and the specific procedure performed.
